The Traditional Craft Centre is a 100% Arrernte owned Aboriginal Art Centre and are a proud member of Desart.
The Traditional Craft Centre was founded by Arrernte men living in Ltyentye Apurte who had learnt the art of making wooden tools, instruments and weapons from elders in their families and the community.
Purchases made on this website go to directly supporting artists, their families and the community allowing them to pass on this knowledge to future generations.
About Urtne / Coolamon
Urtne / Coolamon is a wooden dish made for carrying and collecting things in. It is also used for carrying and laying babies in, which is known to
help strengthen the babies back and provide them with good overall health.
Urtne can be made from many different types of wood such as the heavier, dense woods, like mulga, mallee or gidgee through to the much lighter wood such as wood from the bean tree.
Urtne come in an array of shapes and sizes. The Urtne from our craft centre can come either painted or unpainted, and at times can be finished off with a wood burning.
Approximate size, wood, decorative finish can be specified when ordering.
Starting price is $250 for a small Coolamon.
